Week 6: Earth, Sun and Moon

1. What did you do in Lab?

We discussed several topics relating to the Earth, Sun and Moon. We discussed the early views of geocentrism vs heliocentrism and some of the people and groups who believed in each theory. With a light bulb acting as a representation of the sun, we used globes to and a small ball to represent the Earth and moon. Through these representations we were able to make more clear the plane of the ecliptic, the equator, tropical lines, equinoxes and solstices.

2. What was the big question?

If the sun is rising in the East at 7:00am while the moon is setting in the west, what phase of the moon is it?

The moon would be a full moon

3. What did you learn in Thursday Discussion?

  • How to determine the phase of the moon based on the suns position
  • The shape of the Earths orbit around the sun is almost a perfect circle with the sun in the middle
  • Phases of the moon
  • The sun and the moon travel together throughout the day
  • "Lines" on the Earth refer to points of direct sunlight
  • Shortest shadow during the day tells you which way is North
  • Farthest from the sun on July 5th. Closest to the sun on January 4th.

4. Textbook

       1. What did you learn? I learned a lot of new information about the sun, earth and moon. I was not aware of the early theories on the Earth and the solar system. Geocentrism contains the root geo, meaning Earth, so this theory believes that the Earth is at the center of the universe. Heliocentrism on the other hand, is the theory that the sun is the center. I also did not know about how the catholic church impacted early scientific theories.

       2. What was most helpful? The diagrams really helped me understand the phases of the moon, how an eclipse occurs and how the change of season happens.

       3. What do you need more information on? A lot of these concepts are fairly new information to me so I think it will be helpful to continue referencing these sources to build up my understanding so I am comfortable teaching this information.

       5. What questions, concerns and or comments do you have? I found all of the material in lab extremely interesting and I was engaged the whole time. However, I feel like it was a lot of information that I would like to remember, but it may difficult for me to do so. Like I said earlier, I think it will be very important to keep reviewing this information regularly so I can grasp an understanding where I feel confident in my ability to teach these concepts.
