Week 4
This week in lab we started by checking the progress of our fast plants. Our plants had already started growing a significant amount just in the past week. Next, we started discussing lesson development and the order of teaching we decide to use in our lesson planning. Lesson segments include an introduction, explanation, activity and evaluation. There is no correct answer to the sequencing of these segments. The teacher should use their experience and intuition to determine the best method.
We also learned about the 5E model of Science instruction. This five step model is designed to learn science concepts with conceptual understanding. The five steps are engage, explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate. During lab we designed presentations to summarize the steps and explain the roles of both the teacher and the student at each step. The table our group designed can be found below.I can relate this to my own schooling experience and which types of instruction at each stage I enjoyed most and best promoted my learning of the concepts. For example, in the evaluate stage, I always preferred the more non traditional methods like the ones we discussed in class such as projects, portfolios and journals.
I can apply this learning to my future teaching by referencing this model when I am developing lesson plans. It is very useful to have a proven method of science teaching that will best promote learning for my students. It will be up to me take this information and come up with unique, fun and engaging activities for each stage of the 5E model. I think it will be very important to have variety in the lessons and not approach each stage the same for every new lesson that we do in class.
Great post Matt! I agree with you that offering many types of evaluation methods can be beneficial for many reasons. The students are going to be much more willing to engage with the material, which will result in them learning the material better. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi Matt, great post! I really liked your inclusion of the 5E table. I agree with you, I am also excited to be able to use this in my future lesson planning as it is a proven method. The variety in lessons will be nice as well to use to keep students engaged the whole year. I also liked the non-traditional methods, so I am glad to see they are highlighted in these new methods of teaching.
ReplyDeleteHi Matt! Loved your post! I really enjoyed reading how you will use this in your future classroom. I to prefer nontraditional assessment over tests and quizzes. I feel as though it helped me comprehend the material more so than the alternative!
