Week 1

 1. This week in lab we explored what standards, practices and skills are taught at the Elementary level and where we can find them.

2. To investigate this question we were introduced to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). We explored the NextGenScience.org website as well as viewed the three dimensions of the framework and the Science framework for K-12 science education blueprint developed by the NGSS.

3. We figured out that many states, including Iowa, have turned to the NGSS to guide their science teaching. The NGSS is a great resource for teachers to develop science teaching methods. Within the NGSS, there are three dimensions to learning science. Crosscutting concepts help students explore connections across the domains of science. Crosscutting concepts help students to develop their views of the world around them when the concepts are specifically catered to them. Practices of science and engineering explain what it is that people in the field do to investigate and build systems. It introduces the concept of an "inquiry" and students engage in practices to build, deepen and apply their knowledge of core ideas and crosscutting concepts. Lastly, the core ideas are the key ideas in science that can be broad and interpreted in many ways. These ideas build upon themselves as students progress through grade levels and are eventually grouped into Physical, Life, Earth or space science.

4. My remaining questions just require more time researching the NGSS and getting a better feel for navigating the website and how to find specific standards. There seems to be a lot of information that could be overwhelming but I think more time understanding the concepts and work through this course will make everything seem more clear.

  1. Matt, I really liked how you involved the pictures from the NGSS. I completely connect with you with the questions on how to navigate through the website and standards, as you said it is very overwhelming when it has not been dissected into parts for us, I hope that through time we can get a better grasp and understanding of the NGSS. I personally have never worked with the NGSS but yet used common core through my k-12 education.

  2. Hi Matt! I liked the questions you asked about the NGSS and I feel that same about that as well. The website is kinda confusing and has a lot of information all together. I agree as well that once we move further into the course we will learn how to navigate better and have a better idea on how to look for a specific standard.

  3. Hi Matt! I loved this blog post! the pictures made it super easy for me to follow and recall on our past class in order to keep up with the information. I also agree with the difficulty of navigating the website as a beginner. there is so much information in one place, but once you learn how to use it, it can be very helpful!
